In a recent government meeting, serious concerns were raised regarding the treatment and safety of inmates at Donaldson Correctional Facility, particularly focusing on the case of DeAndre, who tragically lost his life due to a violent incident. Family members of DeAndre detailed their ongoing efforts to secure a transfer for him, citing rampant corruption within the facility and a lack of adequate medical attention for his injuries.

DeAndre's family reported that they made numerous requests for transfers to different dorms or camps, as well as wellness checks, but were met with unresponsiveness from facility officials. Despite expressing concerns about his safety, particularly regarding a known conflict with another inmate, their pleas went largely ignored. They highlighted that DeAndre had been denied parole before the COVID-19 pandemic, despite having less than five years remaining on his sentence, and was overlooked during a significant transfer of inmates in April.

On June 7, just a day before his death, family members were assured by Lieutenant Murray that DeAndre would be checked on and potentially moved to a safer environment. However, this promise was not fulfilled. The day of the incident, DeAndre reached out to his family, expressing urgency for intervention, as he had not received the promised attention from staff. Tragically, just hours later, he was fatally attacked by another inmate.

The family is now calling for accountability, asserting that the Department of Corrections (DLC) failed to protect DeAndre despite their repeated warnings and requests for assistance. This incident has sparked a broader discussion about the safety protocols and oversight within correctional facilities, emphasizing the need for systemic changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
