During a recent government meeting, the Hitchcock Police Department honored Sergeant Mikaela Tinsley with the prestigious Hitchcock Medal of Valor for her extraordinary bravery during an armed robbery incident on May 13, 2023. While attending a family wedding in Memphis, Tennessee, Sergeant Tinsley, off duty and out of uniform, responded to gunfire at Tug's Casual Grill, where three armed suspects attempted a robbery.
Despite the chaos and danger, Tinsley, alongside her cousin Officer Stephen Hemway of the Baytown Police Department, rushed towards the scene to assist. Their quick actions helped secure the area and ensure the safety of bystanders. Tinsley’s decisive response was crucial in managing the situation until Memphis Police arrived, demonstrating her commitment to public safety even when off duty.
The meeting also recognized Officer Jeffrey Cottingham for his five years of dedicated service with the Hitchcock Police Department. Cottingham's contributions to public safety and professionalism were acknowledged as part of the department's tradition of honoring employees at five-year intervals.
These recognitions highlight the commitment and bravery of law enforcement personnel in the Hitchcock community, showcasing their readiness to protect and serve, even in the face of personal risk.
