In a recent government meeting, officials discussed Bill number 2024-11, an ordinance aimed at amending the Las Vegas Municipal Code (LVMC) to prohibit the outdoor release of balloons filled with lighter-than-air gases. The proposed legislation includes significant amendments based on feedback from the bill's sponsor.
City Attorney Jeff Dorkheck outlined two key changes to the bill. Firstly, for a first violation of the ordinance, the city will issue a warning without a penalty, rather than imposing a fine. This adjustment aims to provide a more lenient approach for initial infractions.
Secondly, the ordinance will exempt balloon releases associated with events honoring first responders who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This exception was included following public input, recognizing the importance of such commemorative events in the community.
The proposed amendments are now available for a vote, and the council is inviting public comments on the matter. The meeting highlighted the city's efforts to balance environmental concerns with community traditions.
