During a recent city council meeting in Laguna Woods, officials proclaimed June 2024 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need to address the growing issue of elder abuse in the community. Patty Moulton, representing Alzheimer's Orange County, emphasized the alarming statistics surrounding elder abuse, noting that in 2023, nearly 25,000 calls were made to adult protective services in Orange County, resulting in approximately 17,000 investigations. A staggering 41% of these cases involved financial abuse, often perpetrated by family members.
Moulton pointed out that elder abuse is a silent epidemic affecting over five million Americans annually, costing victims an estimated $36.5 billion each year. She stressed the importance of community vigilance, especially as Orange County's population ages rapidly, with projections indicating a significant increase in residents aged 85 and older by 2030.
Council members echoed Moulton's concerns, urging residents to be aware of the signs of elder abuse, which can manifest in various forms, including physical, emotional, and financial abuse. They encouraged community members to look out for one another and report any suspected abuse to the appropriate authorities.
The proclamation serves as a call to action for residents and businesses to educate themselves on the warning signs of elder abuse and to foster a supportive environment for the vulnerable elderly population in Laguna Woods. The council's commitment to raising awareness aims to empower the community to take proactive steps in preventing elder abuse and ensuring the safety and dignity of older adults.
