During a recent meeting of the Board of Aldermen, public advocate Arnie AC Denhoft raised urgent concerns regarding the extreme heat affecting vulnerable populations in the community, particularly the elderly and those on fixed incomes. Denhoft emphasized the need for the city to provide assistance, such as air conditioning support, to help these individuals cope with temperatures that reached 101 degrees, with a heat index of 109 degrees.
In addition to addressing community welfare, Denhoft highlighted the well-being of city employees, specifically police officers and public works staff, who face additional physical strain due to their roles. He proposed that the city supply these employees with sports drinks to help mitigate the effects of the heat.
Denhoft also brought attention to ongoing issues surrounding former police officer Corporal Matt Schneider, who is now teaching at Graceland University in Iowa. He expressed frustration over the lack of accountability regarding Schneider's alleged theft of police equipment, including an AR-15 assault rifle. Denhoft requested that the Board of Aldermen make public the inventory of firearms owned by the Wentzville Police Department, citing concerns over transparency and public safety. He noted that current records are classified as closed under Missouri law, which limits public access unless the Board votes to release them.
Denhoft's remarks underscored a broader call for accountability within the police department, as he criticized the lack of action taken against Schneider, who he claims has evaded criminal prosecution. He urged the Board to ensure that the county prosecutor reviews the case and that it is presented to a grand jury for further examination.
The meeting concluded without further public comments, but Denhoft's statements have sparked discussions about community health measures and police accountability in Wentzville.
