During a recent government meeting, officials addressed a concerning rise in gang-related graffiti in La Verne, particularly as summer temperatures increased. The police department has proactively responded to this uptick by collaborating with local partners, including the San Dimas police, to swiftly remove graffiti and prevent potential retaliatory acts.
Chief of Police highlighted the importance of public safety, noting that officers have been monitoring graffiti hotspots and working after hours to ensure the community remains safe during removal efforts. The partnership with San Dimas has proven beneficial, as both departments share resources and intelligence to tackle the issue more effectively. This collaboration has already led to arrests, and authorities are actively pursuing additional suspects.
In addition to public safety discussions, the meeting celebrated local achievements, including the recognition of La Verne resident Dean Curley, a freshman shortstop on the national champion Tennessee Volunteers baseball team. Curley, who has also been selected to play for the USA national baseball team, was acknowledged for his accomplishments and contributions to the community.
The meeting also highlighted initiatives for National Recreation Month, particularly efforts led by Yvonne Duran and her team, who organized summer activities for children on the autism spectrum. The local pool was rented for these festivities, with lifeguards providing exceptional support. Duran's work with the Regional Center aims to offer free swim lessons to eligible students, showcasing the community's commitment to inclusivity and recreational opportunities for all residents.
