Durham Police hailed for swift rescue of missing youth

During a recent city council meeting, Durham Social Services Director Maggie Clapp recognized the collaborative efforts of the Durham Police Department and emergency communication staff in successfully locating a missing youth. The incident, which unfolded on July 25, 2024, prompted an Amber Alert after the youth, who was in the custody of the agency, went missing.

Clapp detailed the swift response from law enforcement, highlighting their immediate action to meet with social services staff at the youth's last known location. Throughout the investigation, police maintained communication with social services, sharing critical updates and coordinating efforts to locate both the youth and the suspected adult companion.

The teamwork culminated in the safe return of the youth within 24 hours of the Amber Alert, a feat attributed to the diligence of several officers and 911 communicators. Clapp expressed gratitude for the partnership with the police department, emphasizing the dedication and tenacity of the personnel involved.

In addition to this recognition, the council addressed other agenda items, including a presentation on the 2024 second quarter prime report scheduled for an upcoming work session and a supplemental item related to the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program. The meeting concluded with a unanimous motion to receive the city manager's priority items, underscoring the council's commitment to community safety and effective governance.
