In a recent government meeting, officials presented the proposed budget for 2025, totaling approximately $8.155 billion. This budget reflects a 7.9% increase in the property tax levy and is designed to support over 32,100 full-time equivalent positions.
Key highlights of the budget include a significant allocation of $5 million towards local affordable housing initiatives. The budget is structured around four main themes: public safety, housing, downtown revitalization, and climate action.
The general fund budget for the city and library stands at $401 million, marking an increase of $24 million, or 6.3%, compared to 2024. Meanwhile, special funds are projected at $403 million, which represents a slight decrease of 3.3% from the previous year. Additionally, the debt fund budget has been set at $50 million, reflecting an increase of $5 million, or 11%, over 2024.
The budget team, led by finance director John McCarthy, was acknowledged for their hard work in preparing the extensive 373-page document, with further detailed discussions expected in the coming months as departments present their specific plans.
