Early learning coalition fights to boost kindergarten readiness

In a recent government meeting, Susan Gage, Executive Director of the Early Learning Coalition, presented a comprehensive overview of the organization's mission and programs aimed at enhancing early childhood education in seven counties, including Jackson County. Gage emphasized the importance of preparing children for kindergarten, highlighting that many children entering public schools are not adequately prepared, particularly those who do not participate in the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program.

Gage reported that children who attend VPK have a significantly higher readiness rate for kindergarten—approximately 51%—compared to just 38% for those who do not. This disparity underscores the coalition's commitment to providing high-quality early learning experiences, particularly through its school readiness program, which offers subsidized childcare for working families.

The coalition also administers the Help Me Grow program, which focuses on early developmental screenings to identify children who may need additional support. Gage noted that early intervention is crucial, as research indicates that children who are not reading at grade level by third grade face significant challenges in their educational journey.

During the meeting, Gage requested funding from the county to support these initiatives, emphasizing the need for community investment in early childhood education. She acknowledged the varying needs across different counties and expressed a desire to tailor programs to meet those specific needs effectively.

The discussion also touched on the coalition's collaborative efforts with local childcare providers and schools to ensure that families have access to necessary resources.
