During a recent government meeting, KSA Aviation Planner Michael Mitchell provided an update on the funding and development status of the Windsborough airport. He highlighted that the airport currently receives $150,000 annually from the FAA through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for projects and capital improvements. However, due to a decrease in based aircraft from 10 to 7, the airport has been unclassified by the FAA, which will result in the loss of this funding until the next classification occurs in two years.
Mitchell noted that while the airport has some funds banked for future projects, the classification issue poses a significant challenge for securing additional federal grants, which typically operate on a 90-10 funding split, with the federal government covering 90% of costs and local sponsors responsible for the remaining 10%.
He also discussed ongoing projects, including the installation of an Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS), which will enhance safety for pilots by providing real-time weather data. This project will also be funded through the 90-10 grant structure.
In terms of future development, Mitchell indicated that TxDOT has expressed a preference for continuing development on the west side of the airport due to existing infrastructure, such as the taxiway and terminal. While development on the east side is possible, it would require local funding, as federal support may not be available without the necessary classification.
The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining the airport's classification to ensure continued federal support and highlighted the need for strategic planning in future airport development.
