Lifeguards honored for heroic rescue of young swimmer

During the Derby Kansas School Board and City Council meeting on December 10, 2024, three young lifeguards were honored for their heroic actions that saved a swimmer's life earlier this year. Isaac Meek, Victoria Rogers, and Owen King received the Mayor's Award for Excellence for their quick response during a cardiac emergency involving Riley Lavin Lavender at the Derby Recreation Center on March 6, 2024.

The incident unfolded during a routine swim practice when Riley suffered a cardiac event. Lifeguards and bystanders sprang into action, demonstrating the effectiveness of teamwork and training. The trio implemented the emergency action plan flawlessly, utilized life-saving equipment, and performed CPR with the assistance of Dr. David Niedery until emergency services arrived.

The lifeguards' training, which includes a comprehensive 32-hour American Red Cross program covering water safety, rescue skills, and CPR, proved vital in this high-stress situation. Their preparedness and dedication not only saved a life but also highlighted the importance of community service and leadership.

Riley, who is now recovering and looking forward to returning to swimming, expressed immense gratitude for the lifeguards' swift actions. The pediatrician who treated her emphasized that their intervention was crucial to her survival.
