During a recent city council meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Chris Calcutera presented a proposed budget amendment for fiscal year 2024, seeking an additional $480,000 for the Peoria Sports Complex. This request was prompted by unexpected costs, primarily due to utility overages, inflation, and unplanned expenditures related to facility maintenance and events.
Calcutera highlighted that the sports complex, which serves as a hub for various community and regional events, faced significant utility expenses that accounted for approximately 30% of the budget. Key factors contributing to these costs included increased usage of the facility by teams and events, which has risen due to changes in the minor league baseball system. The complex also experienced a power surge that damaged essential equipment, leading to a $57,000 expense, and the need for unplanned replacements of aging air conditioning units.
Despite these challenges, the sports complex reported strong revenue performance, projecting to exceed its $2.6 million target by reaching approximately $4.3 million for the fiscal year. This success was bolstered by hosting the Savannah Bananas, which generated $138,000 in revenue from three games that attracted fans from across the country. However, Calcutera noted that the Bananas would not return next year, although future opportunities are being explored.
The council unanimously approved the budget amendment, allowing the sports complex to address its financial shortfalls while continuing to support its role as a key driver of tourism and community engagement in Peoria. Looking ahead, the complex is set to host 32 games during the upcoming spring training season, marking a significant increase in activity.
