During a recent government meeting, concerns were raised regarding the construction of a new building adjacent to the Phi Beta Phi sorority and Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Kyle Gavin, the housing director for Phi Beta Phi, expressed significant worries about the impact of the construction on access and safety for residents and emergency services.
Gavin highlighted that the construction would lead to the destruction of a portion of the horseshoe driveway, which is crucial for vehicle access. He questioned whether any easements exist that would allow the sorority to have a say in the matter. His primary concerns included the accessibility for fire trucks and sanitation vehicles, as well as the logistics of food deliveries, which could exacerbate traffic congestion in the area.
The meeting also addressed the traffic management plan, with Alder Ugair seeking clarification on fire access and garbage pickup logistics. It was confirmed that a new fire access lane would be created as part of the project, which would improve current conditions by allowing better access for emergency vehicles. The plan includes a designated area for garbage facilities that will be wheeled out for collection, addressing some of the concerns raised by Gavin.
Additionally, the meeting discussed provisions for temporary parking for drop-offs and pickups, particularly during move-in and move-out periods. The design includes staging areas within the parking garage to facilitate these activities, which aims to alleviate congestion on the surrounding streets.
Overall, the discussions underscored the importance of ensuring adequate access and safety measures in light of the upcoming construction, with commitments made to revise plans based on feedback from the community and city officials.
