In a recent government meeting, representatives from the Clayton Senior Center highlighted the significant growth and revitalization of their programs, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The center, which serves the river community including Clayton, Kate Vincent, Orleans, and Alex Bay, reported a remarkable increase in attendance, with over 500 visitors each month compared to just 50 before the pandemic.
The center has revamped its offerings to better meet the needs of seniors, who are primarily defined as individuals aged 50 and over. Key activities now include a monthly dinner featuring a full meal, dessert, and entertainment for just $8, as well as a variety of arts and crafts classes, exercise sessions four days a week, and regular bingo games. The introduction of a fitness center has also been a significant addition, filling a gap left by the closure of a local gym.
Transportation services have expanded as well, with two buses facilitating trips for 87 seniors last year to local shopping areas and community events, enhancing social engagement and mobility for participants. The center's commitment to fostering an active and vibrant community for seniors was underscored by a personal testimony from a member who shared her transformative journey after overcoming health challenges.
The representatives expressed gratitude for the support received from local officials and emphasized their ongoing efforts to keep the center a vital resource for seniors in the area. They encouraged community members to visit the Clayton Senior Center and participate in its diverse programming, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a strong and supportive environment for aging residents.
