In a recent government meeting, a former university professor voiced strong opposition to a proposed three-year contract with the University of Minnesota, citing concerns over accountability and performance. Drawing on personal experiences from his academic career, he highlighted the detrimental effects of cannabis use on student performance, advocating for measures to mitigate such issues.
The professor likened the contract to hiring a roofer without penalties for non-performance, emphasizing that the current agreement has lacked accountability over its three-year duration. He criticized the absence of new initiatives and pointed out that commitments made in the contract, such as the establishment of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) program, have not been fulfilled.
He expressed frustration that the contract primarily serves the interests of the University of Minnesota rather than the local community, stating that the position should be accountable to Cook County residents. The professor urged the board to reconsider endorsing the contract, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayer funds.
Following his remarks, Christie Caine, Interim Director for the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, was introduced to speak, indicating that discussions on local governance and accountability will continue in future meetings.
