The funding is part of a broader effort to establish an Internet data exchange in Pueblo, which would be the first of its kind outside Denver. This project is expected to reduce latency issues currently experienced by users, as data would no longer need to travel to Denver and back for local communications.

The proposed Internet data exchange is estimated to require around $14 to $15 million in funding, with plans to utilize a site donated by Colorado State University Pueblo. This initiative positions Pueblo as a regional hub for broadband services in southern Colorado, fostering collaboration among various organizations to improve digital access and literacy.

Officials emphasized the importance of addressing the needs of underserved communities, noting that many residents may not fully understand the benefits of reliable internet access. A comprehensive digital marketing strategy is being developed to raise awareness and promote the value of internet connectivity.

The meeting also outlined the organizational structure of the alliance responsible for implementing these broadband initiatives. The library district will serve as the fiscal agent, with multiple committees focusing on advocacy, digital navigation, and broadband access. This expansion of Pueblo's existing navigation committee aims to involve at least 22 organizations in the effort.

Current projects in Pueblo include a $4 million initiative by Intrepid to construct a middle-mile fiber network around the city, as well as a partnership with T-Mobile to provide fiber service to 42,000 households, starting at an affordable rate of $40 per month. Comcast is also expected to offer competitive pricing and services.

Overall, the meeting underscored a proactive approach to enhancing broadband infrastructure in Pueblo, with officials optimistic about the future of digital connectivity in the region.
