Residents of North Boulder are raising urgent safety concerns regarding recent changes to school bus routes that they believe jeopardize the well-being of their children. During a recent Board of Education meeting, local parent Emily Ponson highlighted the cancellation of a long-standing bus stop at Wagon Wheel Gap and Beaumont Road, which had served eight children for over 40 years. The new stop, located at Lee Hill and Wagon Wheel Gap, is reportedly 1.6 miles away and situated on a busier road known for hazardous traffic conditions.
Ponson recounted a recent incident where a driver attempted to pass a stopped school bus, underscoring the dangers posed by the new location. She emphasized that the area has a history of accidents, including a tragic incident involving a cyclist. Ponson argued that reinstating the original bus stop would significantly enhance safety for students, noting that a mere 10-minute drive could mitigate risks.
Despite Colorado School Law not mandating transportation services from the Board of Education, Ponson pointed out that taxpayers contribute 32% of their taxes to these services, making it reasonable for families to expect safe transportation options. She also mentioned a petition with 388 signatures from community members advocating for safer bus routes.
The meeting continued with other parents, including Maggie Miller, who expressed their support for the community's concerns. As discussions unfold, the Board of Education faces increasing pressure to address these safety issues and consider the implications of their transportation policies on local families.
