In a recent government meeting, officials discussed two proposed site plans for a new expo building at the Central Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, focusing on location, accessibility, and future development.
The first option suggests placing the building at the southwest corner of the 17th Street and Peach Avenue intersection. This site would feature a north-facing entrance and a parking lot designed to accommodate approximately 500 vehicles, based on a target of one parking stall for every four attendees. While this plan emphasizes green space and minimal disruption to existing fairground operations, it poses challenges, including the relocation of fair offices and restrooms, which would be situated further from the main fairground activities. Additionally, the plan does not address existing deficiencies in the current buildings north of 17th Street.
The second option proposes a more central location for the expo building, directly east of the current structure. This plan would require relocating several existing animal barns and other buildings, consolidating them into a larger, adaptable space for events. While this option enhances accessibility and visibility for fair activities, it also presents logistical challenges, such as the need to relocate overhead power lines and water mains. Furthermore, the building's placement would straddle the property line between the fair association and the city, necessitating a lot line adjustment.
During the discussions, the potential relocation of the hockey building was also raised, with officials exploring how this could free up additional parking space. The meeting underscored the importance of balancing the needs of fairground operations with the development of new facilities to enhance the overall experience for attendees.
