During a recent government meeting, city officials discussed significant amendments to the Parkland Dedication Ordinance, aimed at addressing the growing need for recreational spaces in light of the city's population increase and rising construction costs.
Assistant Director Miss Aristelli and Parks Planner Miss Liz Carrera highlighted the necessity of these changes, noting that the city has expanded from a population of approximately 176,000 in 2008 to 257,000 in 2022. This growth has made it increasingly difficult to construct new parks, with costs for park development skyrocketing from $80,000 in 2008 to between $660,000 and $1.5 million today, depending on the amenities included.
The proposed amendments include raising the cost per acre of parkland from $55,000 to $156,000 and increasing the park improvement fee from $314 to $1,200. These adjustments aim to ensure that the city can adequately fund the construction of new parks and maintain existing ones. The officials emphasized the importance of moving away from smaller \"pocket parks\" in favor of larger neighborhood parks, which are more sustainable and easier to maintain.
Additionally, the ordinance revisions will incentivize developers to construct parks themselves, allowing them to receive credits for the costs incurred, which could lead to significant savings for the city. The meeting also addressed the need for a more strategic approach to park development, with plans to ensure that new parks are accessible to all residents and meet the community's recreational needs.
The officials expressed their commitment to following the city's master plan, which was adopted two years ago, and to providing adequate recreational facilities for the growing population. The proposed changes are expected to facilitate the construction of new parks and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
