During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the pressing need for an increase in solid waste fees and disposal rates, marking the first significant adjustment since 2010. John Phillips, the director of the solid waste department, highlighted that operational expenses have surged due to rapid inflation, leading to a projected deficit in operating funds by fiscal year 2030 if no action is taken.
Phillips noted that the department's financial situation has deteriorated since the disposal prices were lowered in 2020, a decision that now appears ill-timed given the subsequent economic challenges. Angela Bergison, the department's business and finance manager, elaborated on the financial landscape, clarifying that while the overall budget remains stable, the operational budget is at risk. She emphasized that a portion of the budget is restricted for landfill post-closure funds, which cannot be altered.
To address the financial shortfall, the department is proposing two options for fee increases, set to take effect on January 1, 2025. Bergison acknowledged the challenges posed by supply chain disruptions and labor issues that have compounded costs since the previous fee reduction. The meeting concluded with a commitment to present these options for public hearing, allowing community input before any final decisions are made.
