During a recent government meeting, transportation issues took center stage as officials discussed the findings of a traffic study conducted for a local development project. The study revealed that the project would generate 369 peak hour trips in the morning and 598 in the evening, prompting the need for infrastructure improvements to accommodate the increased traffic.
Key recommendations from the study included the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 136th Street, as well as a left turn lane improvement at Newberry Road. These changes aim to enhance traffic flow and elevate the level of service at these intersections, which is currently rated as acceptable.
Concerns were raised regarding the potential for increased traffic on Southwest 15th Avenue, a scenic and narrow road that residents fear could become a shortcut for drivers. In response, officials proposed an intersection improvement that would discourage shortcutting while maintaining access for local residents. The plan includes a roundabout designed to redirect traffic, ensuring that drivers from the Tioga area would be encouraged to use Newberry Road instead.
Commissioners emphasized the importance of addressing community concerns about safety and traffic volume on 15th Avenue. The proposed roundabout would serve as a traffic calming measure, slowing down vehicles and reducing the likelihood of speeding. However, it was noted that further discussions with local residents are necessary to refine the proposal and ensure it meets community needs.
The meeting highlighted the ongoing dialogue between officials and the community regarding transportation planning, with a commitment to balancing development with the preservation of local roadways and safety for residents.
