During a recent council meeting, the discussion centered on the feasibility study for a proposed Aquatic Center in Johnstown, prompted by community requests for an outdoor pool. The council had commissioned this study to evaluate the practicality and potential challenges of such a project.
Bob McDonald from OLC Architecture presented the findings, highlighting the extensive market analysis conducted over the past year. The study focused on the primary service area of Johnstown, extending to a 15-minute drive radius to assess demographics and community needs. Key indicators revealed a strong interest in recreational swimming, particularly among families, with nearly 40% of households in Johnstown having children—significantly higher than the national average.
The feasibility study also examined national trends in aquatics, emphasizing the importance of swimming lessons and aquatic therapy, especially in light of rising drowning statistics among young children. The analysis indicated a lack of existing aquatic facilities in the area, suggesting a strong market potential for a new outdoor pool.
Community input was gathered through a combination of one-on-one meetings, a steering committee, and an online survey that attracted 677 responses. While the survey was not statistically valid, it provided valuable insights into community preferences and funding options. A significant number of respondents favored a mixed funding approach, including a potential sales tax increase, to support the facility.
The council is now seeking direction on how to proceed with the project, following the comprehensive presentation of the feasibility study. The findings suggest a promising opportunity for an aquatic center that could serve the recreational needs of Johnstown residents and enhance community engagement.
