During a recent government meeting, Chief Reese provided an update on the staffing situation within the Shreveport Fire Department, revealing a significant shortfall in personnel. Currently, the department is operating with 35 firefighters per shift, leaving a gap of approximately 65 firefighters needed to reach full staffing levels of 170. Chief Reese noted that while recruiting efforts are progressing, the department is still facing challenges in filling positions across various divisions, including fire prevention and communications, bringing the total shortfall to around 75 personnel.
The chief emphasized that while salary is a factor in recruitment and retention, it is not the sole reason for the staffing issues. He pointed out that many experienced firefighters are not seeking to leave, but younger staff members often become frustrated with the seniority system that limits their promotional opportunities. This frustration can lead them to seek employment in other sectors, such as the oil industry, where they may find better pay and less demanding workloads.
In addition to staffing concerns, the meeting also touched on the ongoing development of a unified database for the special needs population in the area. Chief Reese indicated that discussions would continue in an upcoming communications meeting with AT&T FirstNet, which is crucial for enhancing emergency response capabilities.
The meeting concluded with a light-hearted note as council members were invited to a boat ride on the department's new rescue boat, highlighting the camaraderie and community engagement efforts of the fire department.
