During a recent government meeting, community members discussed the implementation of a \"Hometown Heroes\" banner program to honor local veterans in the city of Poughkeepsie. The initiative aims to display banners featuring photos and names of service members along local streets, recognizing their contributions and sacrifices.
The proposed cost for each banner is approximately $200, which covers the banner itself, installation brackets, and any remaining funds allocated for transportation and maintenance. This pricing aligns with national standards, and the banners can be made from premium weather-resistant vinyl, allowing for year-round display.
Community advocate Paula Cromartie Pollan, who has a strong family history of military service, emphasized the importance of such recognition, noting that many towns already have similar programs. She proposed forming a committee to oversee the initiative, suggesting that local veterans, Blue Star and Gold Star mothers, and elected officials be involved to ensure community engagement and transparency.
Support for the program has been expressed by VFW Post 170, which could manage the financial aspects due to its nonprofit status. Cromartie Pollan mentioned that applicants for the banners would need to submit proof of military service, specifically a DD-214 form.
The meeting highlighted a growing desire within the community to honor its veterans and foster a sense of pride and recognition for their service. As discussions continue, the proposed banner program could serve as a meaningful tribute to those who have served in the armed forces.
