In a recent village meeting, Oak Park officials declared August 26th through 30th as \"Be Smart Week,\" aimed at raising awareness about secure firearm storage practices to protect children and teens from gun-related incidents. The proclamation highlighted alarming statistics, noting that guns are the leading cause of death among children and teens in the United States, with an estimated 4.6 million children living in homes with at least one unlocked and loaded firearm.
Village Trustee Chibike Anya and President Vicky Stamen emphasized the importance of secure gun storage, stating that research indicates the most effective way to prevent children from accessing firearms is to ensure that all guns are stored unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition. The officials pointed out that approximately 54% of gun owners do not lock all of their firearms securely, which poses a significant risk to public safety.
The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts of schools, hospitals, state agencies, and community organizations in promoting gun safety and reducing injuries and deaths associated with firearms. The village's commitment to this cause aligns with the Be Smart program, developed by Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, which aims to educate the public on responsible gun ownership.
The proclamation received strong support from the village's health department and local health organizations, reflecting a community-wide commitment to safeguarding children and enhancing public safety.
