In a recent government meeting, the request for a variance by Greg Kuehl to exceed the accessory structure size limit at his residence on Hawthorne Avenue was unanimously approved. Kuehl sought permission to construct a 1,184 square-foot accessory structure, which includes a 344 square-foot deck, exceeding the standard limit of 850 square feet by 334 square feet.
City staff reported that the variance would not negatively impact the surrounding area, noting that there was no opposition to the request. The proposed deck will be constructed near the ground and will remain unenclosed, contributing to the rationale for approval. Staff emphasized that if the deck were attached to the home, no variance would be necessary.
Kuehl explained that the deck is intended to provide a level patio area for his wife, who has mobility issues, allowing for easier access without the need to navigate steps. The construction will utilize composite materials, as Kuehl mentioned that his wife prefers this over cement.
The motion to approve the variance was met with no further discussion and passed with a unanimous vote. The decision reflects the community's support for accommodating residents' needs while maintaining the integrity of local regulations.
