Parents Demand Fair School Placement Amidst Community Concerns

During a recent Mill Valley Board of Trustees meeting, parents expressed concerns regarding school placements and the need for additional kindergarten classes in the district. The discussions highlighted the challenges faced by families in Tam Valley, particularly those whose children were placed at Strawberry Point Elementary, which is outside their immediate community.

Elana Nee, a Tam Valley resident, voiced her disappointment after learning that her son was assigned to Strawberry Point, a school she had not realized was part of the district. She emphasized the importance of community connection for her child's social and emotional development, noting that most of the other families in her neighborhood were also placed at different schools, creating a sense of disconnection.

Liz Couch and her husband, Ben Schuller, echoed these sentiments, advocating for the addition of a kindergarten class at Tam Valley Elementary. They called for a special meeting to address the school placement process, which they believe disproportionately affects families in neighborhoods with fewer school options. Couch expressed gratitude for the support from district staff but stressed the need for a more equitable placement system to prevent future families from facing similar challenges.
