LA Launches Free Business Accelerator to Boost Local Economy

The City of Los Angeles is taking significant steps to support local businesses and preserve its entertainment industry while enhancing its environmental credentials.

In a collaborative effort, the LA City Bureau of Street Services and the Economic and Workforce Development Department are launching a free business accelerator program in Reseda. This six-week course aims to assist aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners in establishing and expanding their ventures. Managed by Career Solutions, the program offers resources in marketing, financial management, and expert guidance at no cost. Participants will also have the chance to apply for a $5,000 micro business loan. The next session begins on August 15 at Council Member Bob Blumentfield's office, with applications available online.

In parallel, Mayor Karen Bass has initiated the inaugural Entertainment Industry Council, which includes representatives from major television networks, streaming services, and the Motion Picture Association. This council aims to address the decline in film production in Los Angeles, which has seen a 33% drop compared to five years ago, according to Film LA. To combat this trend, the city is expediting the construction of seven new studios and soundstages under an executive directive aimed at removing barriers to business creation. The council is focused on developing solutions to retain production in LA and support the workforce involved in the industry.

Additionally, the City of LA has achieved re-certification as a community wildlife habitat, becoming the largest city to receive this designation from the National Wildlife Federation. This certification reflects the city's commitment to environmental sustainability, requiring green spaces to provide essential elements for wildlife, such as food, water, and shelter. The certification process involved community engagement in education and habitat restoration projects, supported by the LA City Sanitation and Environment department.
