Lighthouse celebrates 150 years with community festivities

Los Angeles is gearing up for a vibrant weekend filled with community celebrations and educational activities. The Point Fermin Lighthouse will host a grand anniversary party on Saturday, August 17, commemorating its 150 years of history. Organized by the LA City Recreation and Parks Department alongside the Point Fermin Lighthouse Society, the event promises a day of family-friendly activities, including vintage exhibits, games, and performances by the San Pedro High School band and drill team. The first 150 children attending will receive special gifts, making it a memorable occasion for families. The celebration runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

On the same day, the LA Public Library invites residents to enjoy a summer-themed spoken word show presented by the Strong Words crew. This event, taking place at the Central Library's Mark Taper Auditorium at 2:00 p.m., features storytelling, poetry, and a special musical performance by Jason Luckett. Reservations are recommended for this popular series that has captivated audiences in Silver Lake and Atwater Village for over a decade.

Additionally, participants can join a Bioblitz challenge at Ken Molloy Harbor Regional Park, also on August 17, starting at 8:00 a.m. Led by junior urban ecologist Ryan Kinzel, this scientific survey aims to identify various species of plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and attendees should come prepared with sunscreen, water, and a charged phone.
