Summit Lake residents voice traffic and safety concerns over proposed 342 home development

During the City of Dade City Commission Regular Session on December 10, 2024, residents voiced significant concerns regarding a proposed development that could add up to 342 homes near Summit Lake Road and River Road. Local resident Eddie Roberts, who has lived in the area for 42 years, highlighted several pressing issues related to the anticipated increase in traffic and safety risks.

Roberts pointed out that the new development is expected to generate approximately 3,400 additional car trips daily, which could overwhelm the existing road infrastructure that is not designed to handle such volume. He emphasized that the current roads are narrow and may not support the influx of vehicles, raising concerns about congestion and safety.

Another critical issue raised was the presence of railroad crossings at all three exits from the proposed community. Roberts warned that long waits for trains could lead to significant traffic backups, particularly during peak hours, creating frustration for drivers trying to leave or enter the neighborhood.

Additionally, Roberts brought attention to the condition of the roads leading to the development, noting that one of the main access routes is currently unpaved. He questioned whether the developer would be responsible for paving the road or if the financial burden would fall on the city, county, or taxpayers.

Safety was a major theme in Roberts' remarks, particularly regarding emergency services access. He expressed concern about how emergency vehicles would navigate the area if a train were blocking the tracks during a crisis, potentially delaying critical response times for medical, fire, or police services.

The discussions at the meeting reflect a growing need for careful planning and infrastructure improvements as Dade City considers new developments. The concerns raised by residents like Roberts underscore the importance of addressing transportation and safety issues to ensure that community growth does not compromise the quality of life for existing residents.
