Medina City Council approves emergency wellness program amid hospital funding cuts

The Medina City Council convened on December 9, 2024, to address several key agenda items, including a significant ordinance related to medical insurance and wellness programs for city employees.

Mayor Hamill opened the discussion regarding the Medical Mutual contract for 2024 and 2025, highlighting an increase in dental insurance costs due to the absence of a two-year provision. He noted that Medina Hospital, which has supported the Healthy Medina program for over a decade, will cease its financial backing. This change necessitated the city to explore alternative wellness providers for employee health screenings, which are essential for maintaining reduced healthcare costs.

The Mayor emphasized the benefits of continuing with Medical Mutual, which offers discounts for wellness initiatives. Although the city will incur an immediate cost of approximately $42,000, there are potential rebates available if employees meet specific health metrics. The urgency of the matter was underscored by the need for the ordinance to take effect by January 1, 2025, coinciding with the expiration of the hospital contract.

Following the Mayor's presentation, the council voted on the emergency clause associated with the ordinance, which passed unanimously with a 7-0 vote. The ordinance itself was also adopted with the same majority.

In council comments, member Jess Hazelton announced her resignation, stating that January 27 will be her last meeting. She reflected on her five years of service and expressed pride in her contributions to the community. Other council members acknowledged her dedication and wished her well.

The meeting concluded with members expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts throughout the year and extending holiday wishes to the community. The council's focus on improving Medina and fostering community engagement was reiterated, with a reminder for residents to enjoy the local holiday festivities.
