Residents oppose Wawa gas station citing health risks and community disruption in Lake Tuscany

Residents of Martin County are raising significant concerns regarding the proposed Wawa gas station and convenience store, which could disrupt the tranquility of nearby neighborhoods. During the Martin County Board of Commissioners meeting on December 10, 2024, community members voiced their apprehensions about the potential negative impacts of the development.

Tammy Amerson, a resident of Lake Tuscany, highlighted that the 24-hour operation of the gas station would introduce constant noise from vehicles and deliveries, undermining the peace and safety of the residential area. She emphasized the health risks associated with living near gas stations, particularly the exposure to benzene, a known carcinogen linked to serious health issues, including leukemia. Amerson pointed out that the proposed site is less than 50 feet from residential properties, significantly closer than the 500-foot safety buffer recommended by health authorities.

In addition to health concerns, residents are worried about the environmental implications and the overall vision for their community. Amerson urged the commissioners to prioritize developments that enhance quality of life, such as green spaces and community centers, rather than adding more gas stations—of which there are already eight within a two-mile radius.

The discussions at the meeting reflect a growing sentiment among residents to protect their neighborhoods from developments that may compromise their well-being.
