Community gears up for Christmas basket program supporting 279 families and 200 children

Skamania County is gearing up for its annual Christmas Basket Program, which aims to support local families in need during the holiday season. During a recent government meeting, officials expressed gratitude to community members who have contributed through donations and volunteer efforts. The program has received nominations from 279 families, including requests for gifts for nearly 200 children and support for 125 seniors.

With the nomination period now closed, organizers are focused on logistics, including food orders and gift preparations, to ensure that every family receives assistance. The setup for the program will begin next week, with food deliveries scheduled for this week. Officials emphasized their commitment to helping everyone in need, stating, "we've never been able to not take care of somebody."

In addition to the Christmas Basket Program, the meeting highlighted upcoming events, including the "Christmas in the Gorge" festivities and various rentals planned for the weekend. Officials are also working on capital projects and preparing for a prayer board meeting.

Looking ahead, a significant event is scheduled for December 20, when the RTC advisory will present the WASDOT grant applications. This year, the grant process has changed, requiring all submissions to be ranked based on specific criteria. This new system aims to streamline funding decisions and prioritize projects that will have the most impact in the region.
