Currently, 30 percent of the hospital's nursing staff consists of transitional nurses who work for only 120 days. These nurses receive a tax-free bonus of $25,100 per month but often leave for other locations after their short tenure. This turnover disrupts the hospital's connection to the community and creates ongoing staffing crises, as evidenced by the hospital reaching maximum capacity during the summer, resulting in patients being treated in hallways.

The head of Beaufort Memorial Hospital expressed that the situation could lead to dire consequences, including the potential for a tragic incident if a patient cannot receive timely care due to staffing shortages. The hospital's struggles underscore the broader implications of the housing crisis, as the lack of affordable living options directly impacts healthcare services.

In response to these challenges, the committee focused on three key areas in their programming: the development of affordable housing, home repair initiatives, and support for first-time homebuyers. Out of 14 applications received for these programs, eight were selected based on their readiness to begin work and alignment with the committee's goals. Notably, the home repair program emerged as the most popular initiative among applicants.

The discussions at the meeting emphasized the urgent need for solutions to the housing crisis, not only to support healthcare workers but also to enhance the overall well-being of the community.
