Flamingo Ditch Steering Committee demands urgent stormwater solutions after flooding crisis

Pia Weiland, chair of the Flamingo Ditch Steering Committee, provided a poignant account of the flooding crisis that struck the community following Tropical Storm Idalia in August 2023. She highlighted the severe impact on residents, particularly seniors, who were stranded in their homes due to the backup of stormwater from the Flamingo Ditch. Weiland emphasized that the current drainage system is no longer viable and has led to significant hardships for residents and detrimental effects on local beaches, which are vital to the area's economy.
