During a recent ceremony held by Escambia County Fire Rescue, new firefighters took their oaths, pledging to uphold their duties with professionalism and dedication to the community. The event also honored the memory of two esteemed members who passed away in 2023: Chief Gregory Roderick and Lieutenant Phyllis Kircher.
Chief Roderick, who joined the Beulah Volunteer Fire Department in 1976 and rose to the rank of deputy chief before retiring in 2006, was remembered for his decades of service. He answered his final call on July 2, 2023. Lieutenant Kircher, the first female lieutenant in the department, served for over 20 years and passed away on July 29, 2023. Family members of both honorees were present to receive final alarm medals in their memory.
The ceremony also recognized the deployment of Escambia County Fire Rescue's technical rescue team, which was activated for the first time during Hurricane Idalia's landfall on August 30, 2023. The team, part of Florida Task Force 7, included several firefighters who were acknowledged for their service during this critical event.
Additionally, service recognition medals were awarded to individuals who significantly contributed to the department's improvement through unique responsibilities and initiatives. Among those honored was Chief Adam Harrison, recognized for his leadership as fire chief.
This gathering not only celebrated the commitment of new firefighters but also paid tribute to the legacy of those who dedicated their lives to protecting the community.
