During a recent meeting of the Escambia County Fire Rescue (ECFR), several members were recognized for their exceptional service and dedication to the community. Chief Pokran, a long-standing member of ECFR, continues to contribute significantly by assisting with small engine repairs and responding to calls on weekends. Captain Matt Russ has devoted nearly all his free time over the past 15 years to serving the citizens of Escambia County, demonstrating unwavering commitment to the firehouse.
The meeting highlighted the logistical improvements made by retired Lieutenant John Van Meter and David Coulter, who have streamlined fleet services, ensuring timely maintenance and repairs of fire apparatuses. Their efforts have alleviated significant workload from Chief Williams, enhancing the longevity and efficiency of the fleet.
Lieutenant Jim Allen, a pioneer in training and mental health support within the department, has taken the lead on the peer support team, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being among firefighters. His dedication to training has positively impacted many within the department.
Lieutenant Tom Schwartz, a member of the awards committee, has been instrumental in recognizing the hard work of ECFR members and has recently completed crisis intervention training. Firefighter Chris French serves as a mentor to younger members, actively teaching and sharing his extensive knowledge.
Newcomer Scott Jilson has quickly made a name for himself by ensuring smooth operations in the warehouse, allowing his colleagues to focus on their duties without worry. Laura Moore has been pivotal in producing the program booklets for awards, while Shannon Hoffman has documented ECFR's activities through her photography, capturing critical moments and contributing to training and recruitment efforts.
The meeting also acknowledged the distinguished service medals awarded to members who have demonstrated exceptional skill in life-saving situations. Ray Melton, the fire and life safety specialist, was commended for implementing innovative fire prevention programs that have significantly impacted community safety.
Finally, the crew from Engine 6 Seawatch, including Lieutenant Tad Busch and firefighters Michael Madry and Nick Pearson, were recognized for their heroic actions during a recent emergency call, showcasing the bravery and dedication of ECFR personnel in the face of danger.
