The City of North Augusta celebrated the creativity and community spirit of local students during its council meeting on December 16, 2024. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of young writers who participated in a coloring contest and essay competition focused on the community's response to Hurricane Elaine.

Mayor Britton Williams led the ceremony, inviting students from various grades to share their essays and receive awards. The essays reflected the resilience and unity of North Augusta residents in the aftermath of the hurricane, showcasing themes of support, compassion, and community involvement.

Among the standout participants was fifth grader Riley Hanks from Belvedere Elementary, who emphasized the importance of uplifting one another through small acts of kindness. Lily Joe, also in fifth grade, impressed the audience with her vivid vocabulary and poignant reflections on community support during difficult times. Sixth grader CJ Culberson shared his initiative to help neighbors by cleaning driveways, while eighth grader Daja Mattis highlighted the familial bonds formed in the wake of the disaster.

High school students also contributed powerful narratives. Mason Booth from North Augusta High School described how the storm forced families to reconnect through board games and conversations, while Tayla Rogers discussed the role of mental health professionals in aiding recovery efforts.

The event not only celebrated the students' achievements but also reinforced the message of community resilience. Mayor Williams noted the importance of these reflections, stating, "The way that everyone came together during the disaster made us a role model for what other cities should be like."

As North Augusta continues to recover from Hurricane Elaine, the council's recognition of these young voices serves as a reminder of the strength found in community solidarity and the positive impact of youth engagement in civic matters. The council plans to visit the schools to present awards personally, further fostering connections between local leaders and students.
