During a recent government meeting, representatives from the Molokai Community Health Center (MCHC) and Na Pu'uwai Native Hawaiian Healthcare presented updates on their services and future initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes for the local population.
MCHC, established in 2002, serves over 2,600 patients, with more than half identifying as Native Hawaiian. The center operates as a nonprofit, providing comprehensive healthcare services to underserved populations, including those who are uninsured or underinsured. Emphasizing preventative care and chronic disease management, MCHC also addresses social determinants of health by offering support in housing, food security, and education. The center is governed by a board of directors, with over half of its members being patients, ensuring community representation in decision-making.
Key services include primary medical care, behavioral health support, and dental services, with a focus on integrated care. MCHC is currently exploring partnerships to expand its offerings, including a potential relocation due to rising sea levels affecting its current facility.
Landon Opunui, executive director of Na Pu'uwai, highlighted the organization's mission to enhance healthcare access for Native Hawaiians. Founded in 1985, Na Pu'uwai aims to address significant health disparities through culturally adapted healthcare services. The organization operates under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Act, which acknowledges the federal government's responsibility to improve the health of Native Hawaiians.
Opunui emphasized the need for a holistic approach to healthcare, integrating traditional practices with modern medicine. Na Pu'uwai offers a range of services, including primary care, behavioral health, and nutrition counseling, while also focusing on health education and community outreach. The organization has developed programs to combat high rates of diabetes and suicide within the community, and it is committed to workforce development to inspire local youth to pursue careers in healthcare.
Both organizations are dedicated to fostering partnerships and expanding their services to better meet the needs of the Molokai community, reflecting a shared commitment to improving health outcomes and addressing systemic barriers to care.
