Rockville City Council seeks donations for holiday gifts benefiting over 600 families

On a crisp December evening, the Rockville Mayor and Council convened for their 29th meeting of the year, setting the stage for discussions that would touch on community service, holiday giving, and local cultural milestones. As the meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and civic pride.

City Manager Jeff Mihalik took the floor to share notable community efforts, highlighting the remarkable contribution of Boy Scout Troop 1094. In just seven hours, the scouts collected over 50 bags of trash from the King Farm Stream Valley, demonstrating a commendable commitment to environmental stewardship. Mihalik expressed gratitude for their hard work, emphasizing the positive impact such initiatives have on the community.

The meeting also spotlighted the city’s annual holiday drive, which aims to support over 600 families and more than 1,500 children this season. Mihalik urged residents to donate books and toys, particularly for tweens and teens aged 13 to 17, as well as younger children aged 0 to 11. With donation boxes set up at various city buildings, the call for community support resonated strongly, reflecting Rockville’s spirit of giving.

In addition to community service, the council celebrated the achievements of local employees, recognizing those who have dedicated decades of service to the city. The meeting also marked a significant cultural moment as the Rockville Civic Ballet celebrated its 50th anniversary. The council acknowledged their recent performance at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theater, which is now closed for renovations aimed at enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The box office will temporarily relocate to Glenview Mansion, ensuring that the community remains informed and engaged during this transition.
