During a recent government meeting, officials discussed a significant water reclamation project aimed at addressing the growing water needs of the John's Island community. The project, which has been in the works for over two years, is a collaboration between local authorities and John's Island Water Management, with the goal of enhancing water supply for both the golf course community and residents.
The initiative arose from the community's increased demand for reclaimed water, which had been fully utilized. To meet this demand, the design of a new water reclamation facility was initiated. Concerns were raised regarding potential contamination from snail larvae in the main relief canal, which could affect the new facility's membranes. In response, engineers proposed a solution to treat water directly from the canal using existing filters from the water treatment plant.
The project is set to treat up to 4 million gallons of water, with John's Island expected to utilize approximately 3 million gallons. This public-private partnership has garnered over $2 million in grants, facilitating its advancement. Officials expressed satisfaction with the bidding process, noting that the selected contractor has extensive experience with similar projects across Florida.
The meeting concluded with optimism about the project's future, emphasizing its potential benefits for the community and the innovative approach of tunneling beneath waterways to minimize disruption.
