In a recent government meeting, Ingrid Stanchfield, CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kennebec Valley, provided an update on the organization's progress and challenges. The highlight of her presentation was the unveiling of a new sports field, which is nearing completion and expected to be ready for use by August, just in time for the upcoming pre-season activities.
Stanchfield reported that the club is experiencing significant growth, with 1,335 registered members, a notable increase from previous years. However, the organization is facing workforce development challenges, struggling to maintain adequate staffing levels. This has led to administrative staff stepping into classroom roles, impacting their ability to manage other essential programs.
The club currently has a waiting list of 120 for early childhood programs, indicating a high demand for services. Stanchfield noted that the new facility has seen an average daily attendance of 90 children, a substantial increase from the previous average of 45 to 60 in the old building. This surge in participation reflects the community's enthusiasm for the club's offerings.
Additionally, the Boys and Girls Club received a grant from the state of Maine aimed at expanding childcare services, which has helped offset some of the costs associated with the new building. Stanchfield emphasized the importance of community support and collaboration in addressing the ongoing workforce challenges and enhancing program availability.
The meeting concluded with a reminder of the club's commitment to providing enriching experiences for children and families in the community, despite the hurdles they face.
