Gainesville reports zero gun murders since May as city tackles violence as public health issue

In a recent joint meeting of the City of Gainesville and Alachua County Commission, officials highlighted significant progress in addressing gun violence, marking a notable achievement for the community. Since May 2024, Gainesville has not recorded any gun-related homicides, a milestone that city leaders emphasized as a positive outcome of their ongoing efforts to treat gun violence as a public health issue.

Mayor Lauren Poe opened the discussion by acknowledging the collaborative work initiated by Commissioner Nucken Walker earlier this year. The city has implemented various strategies aimed at curbing gun violence, which have collectively contributed to a 33% reduction in homicide rates compared to the same period last year. Additionally, there has been a 50% decrease in the number of individuals shot and a 28% drop in shots fired calls.

Bridal Coleman, the gun violence intervention program manager, provided further insights into the data collected by the Gainesville Police Department. She noted that the establishment of a dedicated gun violence unit has been instrumental, with officers committing over 11,000 hours to investigate and address violent crimes. The city has also engaged with community organizations, such as the Gainesville Police Athletic League, to enhance outreach and support.
