During the East Hartford Board of Education meeting on December 16, 2024, a highlight was the recognition of Rona, a fifth-grade student who participated in the Kid Governor program. Although Rona could not attend due to inclement weather, her achievements were celebrated through a video presentation showcasing her dynamic platform focused on building confidence and addressing insecurities among students.

Rona, who recently moved from Botswana, inspired her classmates to engage in the Kid Governor process, leading to nine students creating their own platforms. Her authenticity and public speaking skills impressed both students and staff, resulting in her selection as one of seven candidates to advance in the statewide competition. While she did not win the Kid Governor title, she expressed pride in supporting the elected candidate and is now a member of the Kid Governor Cabinet.

The school community has embraced the initiatives proposed by all nine candidates, integrating elements of their platforms into school activities. This collaborative effort not only honors the students' hard work but also fosters a sense of empowerment and involvement among the youth in East Hartford.

As Rona embarks on her journey with the Kid Governor Cabinet, the school looks forward to the positive impact her platform will have throughout the year, reinforcing the importance of student voices in shaping their educational environment.
