Residents demand accountability for flooding response at Manatee Dam during community meeting

Residents of Manatee County voiced urgent concerns about flooding and dam safety during the recent Board of County Commissioners (BCC) meeting, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent future disasters.

One resident, who has lived in Lakewood Ranch since 1996, recounted the severe flooding experienced in 1998 and the ongoing issues with creek management. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the creeks to prevent rapid water release that exacerbates flooding downstream. “All I ask is you fix it so it doesn't happen again,” he urged, reflecting the frustrations of many community members affected by recent storms.

Another speaker, Chris Whitaker, a lifelong resident, brought attention to the significant flooding caused by the recent storm, dubbed "100-year storm Debbie." He recalled a similar flooding incident in 2003 that led to the evacuation of 2,000 residents, raising alarms about the current state of the Manatee Dam. Whitaker criticized the county's communication during emergencies, questioning why alerts were sent out only after critical actions were taken during the storm. He pointed out that previous administrations had provided better warnings, suggesting a decline in operational effectiveness.

Whitaker also raised concerns about the dam's structural integrity, noting that emergency spillway gates were opened at dangerously low water levels. He called for immediate repairs to ensure the dam's safety before the next storm season, citing past warnings about necessary maintenance that had not been addressed.

The discussions at the meeting underscored a growing urgency among residents for improved flood management and communication from county officials. As the community grapples with the impacts of climate change and extreme weather, the need for proactive measures to safeguard public safety and property has never been more critical.
