New Kent County plans $6M in economic incentives to attract major businesses

New Kent County is set to see significant economic growth following the approval of over $6 million in economic development incentive grants during the Planning Commission meeting on December 16, 2024. These grants are expected to generate more than $30 million in tax revenue for the county over the next decade, with major projects including AutoZone, Buc-ee's, and CarMax receiving substantial funding.

The county's economic development strategy aims to attract larger businesses by offering competitive incentives, a necessity in today's market where companies are courted by various localities across the country. In addition to economic incentives, the meeting addressed critical funding for public safety. The county plans to maintain a rotation schedule for ambulances, ensuring that emergency services remain efficient and effective.

Further discussions included a $1 million proposal for constructing a new fire station to replace the aging Station Number 2, with negotiations ongoing for a suitable location. The meeting also highlighted the need for updated equipment and facilities, including $144,000 for EMS equipment that automates CPR compressions, and $260,000 for server improvements to enhance the county's information technology infrastructure.

Parks and Recreation projects were also on the agenda, with funding requests for a splash pad at Quentin Park and basketball courts at Pine Fork Park, both of which were identified as community priorities through resident surveys. The county is committed to enhancing recreational facilities, with additional funds allocated for playground equipment replacement at Quentin Park.
