The Douglas County Board of Education meeting on November 4, 2024, featured a celebration of local athletic achievements, highlighting the accomplishments of two middle school teams: the Fair Play Lady Jags softball team and the Mason Creek Lady Wolves volleyball team.
The meeting commenced with a recognition of the Fair Play Lady Jags, who concluded their regular softball season undefeated with a record of 8-0. The team showcased impressive pitching and solid defense, accumulating 58 hits from 1,181 at-bats, resulting in a batting average of 32% and an on-base percentage of 57%. Their success continued in the county tournament, where they triumphed over Mason Creek Middle School to secure their 19th county title, marking their fourth consecutive championship win. The players and coaches were invited to the front, where their names were called to acknowledge their contributions.
Following this, Dr. Tiffany Weaver, principal of Mason Creek Middle School, presented the achievements of the Lady Wolves volleyball team. The team finished their regular season with a 5-2 record and entered the tournament as the third seed. After a series of challenging matches, including a victory over Turner Bridal and a loss to Chapel Hill, the Lady Wolves fought their way to the championship game. They successfully defeated Chapel Hill twice in a double-elimination format, earning their first-ever volleyball championship after an intense day of competition that lasted over ten hours. The team’s resilience was highlighted, along with the recognition of two seventh graders, Dina Carmack and Aliyah Polk, who received all-conference honors.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude towards the coaches, parents, and the Board for their support of middle school athletics. The importance of extracurricular activities in the educational experience was emphasized, encouraging the young athletes to remain engaged in sports as they progress to high school. The evening celebrated not only the teams' victories but also the dedication and hard work of all involved in fostering a supportive athletic environment in Douglas County.
