Carson City officials push for local COVID testing equipment amid rising case concerns

During a recent meeting of the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners, a significant discussion emerged regarding the need for local COVID-19 testing capabilities. Commissioners expressed frustration over the current reliance on state testing facilities and the delays in obtaining results, which have reportedly improved but still lag behind ideal timelines.

One commissioner highlighted the reluctance of residents, particularly seniors, to get tested due to the lengthy isolation and quarantine requirements that follow a test. This concern underscores the need for quicker testing solutions. The board discussed the potential for acquiring lab equipment to facilitate local testing, emphasizing that funding is available and that establishing a local facility could enhance the community's response to health crises.

Patrick Cates, a representative from the health department, noted that Carson Valley Medical Center is in the process of requesting lab equipment funding through federal CARES Act money. He also mentioned that the turnaround time for test results has improved from seven days to approximately four to five days, and that efforts are underway to increase testing capacity through partnerships with private labs.

The conversation also touched on the challenges posed by existing mandates and the need for a comprehensive understanding of the infection rates within the community to effectively allocate resources for treatment. The commissioners expressed a desire for more autonomy in testing and health management, pointing out that other counties in Nevada have established their own testing systems.

In a forward-looking move, the board plans to invite a representative from Carson City Health and Human Services to the next meeting to provide further insights into testing science and strategies. This step aims to enhance the board's understanding and improve local health responses moving forward.
