Mesquite Metro Airport unveils ambitious 20-year master plan for growth and development

The Mesquite City Council took a significant step towards enhancing local aviation infrastructure during their meeting on December 16, 2024, by reviewing and seeking approval for the Mesquite Metro Airport Master Plan. Presented by Airport Director Eric Pratt and consultant Eric Pfeiffer from Kauffman Associates, the plan outlines a comprehensive vision for the airport's development over the next 20 years.

The master plan is designed to address the anticipated growth in airport operations, projecting an increase from approximately 110,000 operations to nearly 155,000 by 2044. This growth is attributed to the expanding Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and the rising demand for general aviation services, including flight training and business aviation. Currently classified as a B2 airport, the plan aims to upgrade the airport to a C2 classification, which will accommodate larger and faster aircraft, thereby enhancing safety and operational efficiency.

Key components of the master plan include a proposed runway extension from 6,000 to nearly 7,000 feet, which will better serve the evolving fleet of aircraft. The plan also emphasizes the need for additional hangar space and parking aprons to meet increasing demand from businesses and private aircraft owners. The total estimated cost for the proposed improvements is approximately $136.8 million, with potential funding sources including federal and state grants.

The council's approval of the master plan is crucial for submitting the airport layout plan to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), which will determine eligibility for grant funding. The plan also includes a phased approach to development, with immediate projects focusing on apron expansions and new hangars, while more extensive runway modifications are slated for the long term.

In addition to the airport master plan, the council also received a presentation on a citywide pavement analysis, indicating ongoing efforts to maintain and improve local infrastructure. The discussions reflect the city's commitment to fostering growth and ensuring that Mesquite remains a competitive hub for aviation and business development in the region.
