The School City of East Chicago celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant flag parade and cultural events, showcasing the rich diversity of its student body. Veronica Ayala, the English learner specialist at Black Middle School, highlighted the importance of community engagement and cultural pride during her address at the Regular School Board Meeting on October 22, 2024.
Ayala expressed her passion for supporting English learner students and emphasized the strong relationships built with families and the broader East Chicago community. She recounted a series of successful events, including Lotería Night and Family Movie Night, which brought together students, families, and staff in celebration of Hispanic heritage. Notably, for the first time, story time sessions featuring Hispanic heritage pioneers were held in 7th and 8th-grade classrooms, enriching the educational experience for students.
The highlight of the month was a mariachi night, where students showcased their talents and celebrated their cultural heritage through music and presentations. Ayala encouraged the community to reflect on the achievements of those who came before them, reinforcing the values of unity and family that are central to Hispanic culture.
The meeting also featured a flag parade representing various Hispanic countries, including Argentina, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, symbolizing the diversity within the East Chicago community. Ayala thanked the board for supporting these initiatives, which foster a sense of belonging and pride among students and families.
As the school district continues to embrace and celebrate its cultural diversity, these events serve as a reminder of the importance of community and the shared values that unite them. The School City of East Chicago is committed to nurturing an inclusive environment where all students can thrive and celebrate their heritage.
